About the Programme
Carnegie Mellon
University Africa is Carnegie Mellon’s graduate engineering campus in Kigali, Rwanda,
offering research-driven master’s programmes that combine rigorous coursework with industry-aligned
problem solving. The M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering builds advanced expertise across
embedded systems, communications, signal processing, robotics, and intelligent systems.
I am beginning this programme in August 2026, building on my undergraduate research in embedded systems,
IoT, and smart agriculture. My focus at CMU Africa spans IoT, robotics, embedded systems, and energy
systems—areas where I aim to deepen both theoretical foundations and applied research impact.

English Enhancement Program (EEP)
Before the official start of the M.S. programme in August 2026, I participated in the
English Enhancement Program (EEP) — a one-month pre-academic intensive
offered by Carnegie Mellon University Africa. Designed for incoming graduate students,
EEP sharpens the communication and academic skills essential for success in a rigorous
research environment.
The programme was both enjoyable and intense. It challenged us on multiple fronts:
refining grammar and vocabulary for precision, building confident oral presentation and
representation skills, developing critical thinking, conducting academic research, and
— perhaps most importantly — learning to evaluate claims with evidence rather than
accepting opinions at face value. This is the academic standard CMU-Africa expects.
Beyond the classroom, weekends offered moments of camaraderie and cultural exchange
with fellow scholars from across the African continent, forming bonds that would carry
into the semester ahead.

Internet of Things (IoT): Real-time sensing, edge computing, and cloud-integrated
monitoring systems for agriculture, energy, and infrastructure
Robotics & Automation: Intelligent control, sensor fusion, and autonomous
systems for industrial and field applications
Embedded Systems: Firmware development, low-power design, and secure communication
on resource-constrained hardware
Energy Systems: Power monitoring, energy storage, and sustainable electrification
for off-grid and smart-grid contexts
AI & Machine Learning: Applying deep learning and computer vision to
engineering problems in crop health, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance
Research Foundation
Before starting at CMU Africa, I built a strong research track record during my undergraduate studies at
FUTMinna—including published work in embedded systems, IoT security, and smart agriculture that
informs the direction of my graduate research.
Research Assistant, Department of EEE (2023): Designed a two-factor authentication
home security prototype under Prof. J. G. Kolo, achieving sub-second door authentication with
Arduino-based hardware
Final Year Project (2022): Developed an automatic railway crossing gate system
using IR sensors under Engr. Isiyaku A. Saleh—later published in a peer-reviewed journal
Smart Agriculture Research (2025–2026): Co-authored an intelligent crop
health monitoring and disease detection system combining IoT soil sensing with MobileNetV2-based
image classification
